RUBOW architects has won 1rd prize in the invited competition ‘Master Plan for The University of Aalborg in Ballerup and 15.000 m2 of mixed office/university.

The aim of the project is to create a flexible master plan, based on the synergy of a dense environment of facilities inside and outside the spacious buildings. Each building makes a compact, square volume with three levels, connected through an organic and diversely shaped atrium which enables visual and functional connections, improved daylight conditions on all floors and a great variety of spatial experiences through the building. The building structure provides for multiple organizational strategies which can be even more emphasized through a catalogue of surfaces, work and common spaces, and technical/functional additions. The compact shape, diagonal orientation and façade cutouts enable major indoor climate advantages, among others better indirect daylight and less heating from direct sunlight on sun exposed façades.

Buildings as well as landscape facilities are planned as educational tools, providing a number of facilities for communication, sharing of knowledge, exhibitions and physical test grounds in the ambition to engage students, teaching staff  and employees in subjects like climate changes, sustainability, light, sound and material impacts.

Sustainability is approached and integrated in all levels of the project, from geothermal systems for floor heating and cooling to an energy efficiently designed façade which provides natural shade or light according to the need in specific spaces. Economic and social aspects are equally approached.
