PROJECT: Denmark’s Rowing Stadium

CLIENT: Fonden Danmarks Rostadion

Denmark’s Rowing Stadium at Bagsværd Lake will fulfil the vision of creating a rowing stadium in an international league of its own. Here, in a location poised between the lake and the forest, the sporting elite will meet the broader public, and the classic discipline of rowing will interact with other forms of sport.

The new national rowing stadium will extend along the shores of Bagsværd Lake and include a training and competition facility with a judges’ tower and spectator stands. The heart of the facility will be the rowing centre with a boathouse, workshop, training facilities, meeting space and offices. The rowing centre will be the lynchpin for the rowing stadium’s wide-ranging activities. Instead of being dug into the landscape, the rowing centre will be built up from the grid structure of the boathouse into a transparent, wood-clad building. The transition between the lake and the forest will also be drawn right into the rowing centre. So inside the building the varying heights will give a sense of the lake-facing slope and provide a constant view into the forest and out over the lake.

The rowing centre project will also include the construction of a judges’ tower. Inspired by the expanse of the lake and the verticality of the forest, the tower will be an elevated, sculptural, wooden structure. The façade’s vertical wooden slats will reflect the architecture of the rowing centre, investing the tower with an upright look as a contrast to the horizontal lines of the spectator stands. While the materials and simple shapes of the tower mean the it will blend naturally with the environment, it will also stand out and form a visual landmark, when viewed from the lake. In addition, on the forest-facing side, the tower will have an integrated climbing wall and wall bars for outdoor training. Together with the covered terrace, this will make the tower an ideal destination for a wide range of visitors.

"When it comes to the sports of rowing, canoeing and kayaking, Denmark is one of the best practitioners in the world. Today we are celebrating a major milestone in a shared and long-held desire for new, unique facilities that cater for both grassroots and elite sporting environments here on Bagsværd Lake. It is a wonderful project that reaches out to the entire capital region." - Frank Jensen / Lord Mayor of Copenhagen and Chairman of Team Denmark
