Nokia SEZ Telecom Industrial Park in Chennai hosts Nokia and seven of its subcontractors. The area is based on a master plan by Pöyry Finland, and established within a special economic zone (SEZ). There will be about 20 000 people working in the area of 84 hectares by the end of the year 2007.
The master plan dictates not only the guidelines of production facilities and traffic planning, but also the handling of water and waste, and the area reservations for the supply of electricity. The service area for the industrial park will be located beside the SEZ area, and will include a health center and children’s daycare. We have supervised the implementation of the master plan by reviewing ongoing designs.
In addition to the master plan, Pöyry has made the sketch layout for the mobile phone factory, sized ca. 30 000 sq.m. The project was started in the beginning of 2005. We also made cost estimates and helped Nokia in selecting the contractors: construction started in June and the first mobile phones were already manufactured in December 2005.
Pöyry Finland is actively participating in the continuing development of the site. For example, logistics center based on our sketch design is under construction.
