House in Nagaoka

Japon

I am interested in addressing the relationship between architecture and society.

Architecture is not a direct reflection of the client’s desires, but rather should be filtered through the relationship with society. For instance, we must consider the balance between the continuity of the landscape and the independence of the structure. Yet that does not necessarily lead to architecture inhibited by social norms; in some cases taking the surrounding community into consideration can send design in a more radical direction. In either case, my intention is to create architecture which is based on a careful analysis of society and which both reflects and critiques that society.
